Sun Yue tied a career-high 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, helping the Beijing Ducks defeat the Liaoning Flying Leopards 103-84 Tuesday night in Game 1 of the CBA Finals.

“I’m not a shoot-first guy, but when the chance is there and my hands are super hot, I’ll shoot without hesitation.” Sun said. “Defense is my thing. Defense will repay us with a victory.” He had 3 blocks and 8 rebounds. He and the defending champion pushed ball hard and made stops, allowing Liaoning to have 10 assists and score a season-low 84 points.

“That’s why Sun has tremendous value for us.” Min Lulei, coach of Beijing said after the game. “We need all of our guys to show what they are capable. Sun stepped up when he was needed most. ”

Ex-NBA all-star Stephon Marbury added 22 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists for the defending champion, who was swept by the opponent in the regular season. Li Gen had 13 points, Randolph Morris had 10 points and 13 rebounds and Zhu Yanxi scored 12 points, including four 3-pointers.

Lester Hudson had 26 points and 7 steals, and Han Dejun had 14 points and 8 rebounds for the Flying Leopards, which are playing the first final series in 8 years.

“We lost it for two reasons. First, we couldn’t protect the board; second, we gave them too many open shots from beyond the arc.” Liaoning’ s coach Guo Shiqiang said, “We’re trying to pull the series into the 7th.”

Beijing controlled the game most of the time, only trailing for about 2 minutes in the second quarter after they wasted 24-15 lead in the first quarter.

Game 2 is Thursday night in Benxi, Liaoning.
